Madam Speaker

I wrote this in my notebook during the immediate aftermath of last week's election. Just getting to post it now. More on the election in the days ahead. Stay tuned.

Last night as the confetti dropped and the music blasted, I realized something: This is equality on the march. It's a symbol of everything we stand for and it's a very, very good thing.

Our nation has never had a female Speaker of the House. In a little more than 30 days, we will. Congratulations, Madam Speaker Pelosi.

It's easy in 2006 America to forget that this kind of historic first can still happen. That our Democratic Party is the first to make it so is a testament to our "San Francisco" values.

I don't really have anything brilliant to add to this cool experience. It's just my favorite part of the Democratic victory so far.
