Two Twins losses and the magic number is down to 1. A win tonight and the Tigers can clinch the AL Central. It's going to be one heckuva party.

Tigers lose tonight, but so do the Twins. The magic number is down to three. Remember, the Tigers play three against the Royals to close out the season. It's gettin' close now. Get excited Tigertown.

With today's 4-3 win over Toronto, the Tigers have trimmed their "magic number" to win the AL Central down to 4. Four combined Tigers wins or Twins losses and the title is theirs.

The Twins have to play almost perfect baseball the rest of the way to catch us.

Two big highlights from tonight's game. First, Placido Polanco had his first big game since returning to the lineup, driving in three. His presence at the top of the order will be absolutely vital in the post-season. With him, the Tigers were the best team in the bigs by a large margin. Without him, they went into a month-long struggle.

Also, Jeremy Bonderman had four strikeouts tonight to finish the season at precisely 200. It's the first time a Tigers pitcher hit the double-hundo since Jack Morris in 1987, the last time the team made the playoffs. Congrats to Bonderman.

Now that the pressure of making the playoffs is gone, the Tigers have been on a tear, winning 8 of their last 12 games. Plus, they have also pulled into a tie for best record in baseball and with it home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. I can't wait.

With their 11-4 victory this afternoon over the Kansas City Royals, the Detroit Tigers clinched their first playoff spot in 19 years.

Now, there's still plenty of work to do to win the division (Magic Number: 6), the American League pennant, and the World Series. But for one day at least, it's a time to shake up a beer bottle and pour it over your head.

Three years ago, when the Tigers lost a record-setting 119 games, my buddy Joe and I used to demonstrate our never-say-die Tigers loyalty by saying "Go ahead...lose 'em all. We'll still be Tigers fans." Nothing could ever stop me from rooting for this team.

However, I'm pleased to report today, that it's a heckuva lot more fun to actually win them all.

See you in October.

The Tigers beat the Orioles 17-2 tonight behind strong pitching from Jeremy Bonderman and hitters who know a good thing when they see it. Let's just say the Orioles bullpen is a very, very good things.

The Detroit nine expand their lead in the AL Central to 2 games and are primed for the stretch run. This kind of victory is just what the doctor ordered for a team that hasn't been playing well. Let's go rip off a few more, shall we?

Without further ado, here's the official Tigers theme song:

Yes, I first heard the song on a Grey's Anatomy commercial. Yes, it's a pretty shameless Coldplay ripoff. Yes, it's even sadder and even dadder than even Coldplay.

I don't care. I love it. Soaring and important and delicate and fragile all at the same time. Just a great great song.

Sorry folks - I bought it on iTunes, so I don't have an MP3. But you can stream it on the Snow Patrol MySpace.

Let's face it.' The Tigers aren't playing all that well.' They still have a decent lead on both the White Sox and the Twins, so I'm not too worried about their playoff chances.' Although I'd like to see them turn it around in September, surging into the playoffs.

One thing is certain, however.' The Tigers cannot finish with a losing record.' With their 82nd victory a couple nights ago, they are assured of finishing above .500 for the first time since 1993.

Think about it, I haven't rooted for a winning baseball team since I was 14 years old.' This season has been absolutely fantastic.

Special thanks are in order, I think, to the brave men still on the team from 2003.' That's when the Tigers set an American League record with 119 losses.' They could have lost 'em all that year, and I'd still be a fan.' In fact, suffering through that makes 2006 that much sweeter.

Anyway, here they are.' The Tigers who saw the lowest of the lows and lived to tell the tale.

Finally, I'd like to leave you with the best Tigers highlight of August, Craig Monroe's game-winning HR in the 9th off Yankees reliever Scot Proctor.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to Vermont.  We engaged in the following activities:  relaxing, eating, canoeing, eating, swimming, eating, s'mores eating, and eating.

We also made ribs.  It was completely terrific.  See the photos.

Also Brian and I totally invented a new sport called grass luge.  Here's a bonus photo to show you what I mean.

There he goes!
